DURATRAX XL FIELD BAGS
PRODUCT WATCH

by Peter Vieira

Field Bags photo Are you still heading out to the track each Sunday with all your gear packed into a box that's a refugee from the fishing department at Wal-Mart? I confess that was my tool and gear storage mode for a long time, too. Then I got hip to the bag scene, and life got easier. I could carry more, more easily.. Everything fit—even my car and transmitter. If you haven't made the leap from plastic and latches to fabric and zippers, DuraTrax has a couple of new items you'll want to check out: the XL Field Bag (part no. DTXP2000 XL - $34.99 retail), and the XL Deluxe Field Bag (part no. DTXP2010 Deluxe - $49.99 retail).

These extra large Field Bags are made of 420-D nylon, which DuraTrax says is tear- and puncture-resistant, and both feature reinforced interior compartments to prevent that lumpy, sagging look. (I'm talking about the bag; if you're lumpy and sagging, that's your problem.) To give the bags a good test, I've been hauling my stuff around in them for about a month. No problems so far: no rips or tears; the handles are still attached; the zippers still work. And they hold a lot; just check out the photos. On the downside, the shoulder straps are a little narrow; loaded for bear, I felt as if my arm might be severed by the shoulder strap.

All in all, these XL bags are reliable and rugged; they're tougher than their somewhat thin nylon might lead you to believe. If all you want is to transport a few tools, your car, your transmitter, and some batteries to the parking lot or playground, get the XL. For the dedicated racer (or hardcore equipment junkie), the XL Deluxe is the way to go.
